HORNSEA AND DISTRICT INDOOR BOWLS CLUB
CLUB SITUATION UPDATE (Covid19)
HIBC:
CLUB UPDATE, DECEMBER 2020
OPENING/CLOSURE
As we are located within a Tier 3 area, the club will be closed for the rest of 2020. This will be reviewed in early 2021. However, even if we then move into Tier 2, the restrictions mean that bowling operations will remain financially unviable. The club will probably only open on our return to Tier 1. These decisions follow the policy of most other bowling clubs.
FINANCES
As the AGM was postponed, the Directors feel it is timely to update the members regarding the financial situation.
The accounts for year ending 30.9.20 have been signed off, but cannot be formally presented until the re-arranged AGM. However, the important figures are now included in order to highlight the scale of the problem.
Bowling income from rink-fees and subscriptions are critical to our operations. Rink-fees for last season fell by £26k (i.e.35%.) and subscriptions by £7k (i.e.57%.) £2,500 was also refunded to members who had paid in advance for matches which were cancelled due to Lockdown. Other income from Bridge and other organisations was also reduced by £5k. Function room income has never been a net contributor to overall finances.
A net loss of £18k is reported for last year, but this could have been considerably worse (approximately £57k) had Government grants and furlough payments not been available. The club did, however install a new ventilation-system in order to ensure a totally safe bowling environment.
The club still has capital reserves, but another similar year would leave its viability in jeopardy.
THE WAY FORWARD
The club now needs a prudent ongoing approach to its finances, and an additional cash-injection in order to restore normal operations, hopefully by September 2021.
1. FEES/SUBSCRIPTIONS
Disappointingly, only 156 of the membership have currently paid this year’s subscriptions. Subscriptions remain our only source of income now that bowling has ceased, and overheads must still be paid.
This year’s fees, which have not increased for many years, were reduced in order to ease cash-handling during the pandemic. A rise in both subscriptions and fees may therefore be inevitable in September 2021.
A Joining subscription is also under consideration, including those members not registered this year.
2. FUND-RAISING OPTIONS UNDER REVIEW:
· A donation from full members of £10, or multiples thereof, above their annual subscriptions could be used as lots in a one-off draw for Life Membership
· A ‘200 Club’ to replace the current Lotto, with a yearly subscription of , say, £50.00, with three payouts per month.
Members’ feedback on these options would be greatly appreciated.
Many members presumably expect that the club will resume as normal, for their enjoyment, after the current crisis is over. It is vital that all bowling-members make their contribution: you are the owners and backbone of the club.
WE WISH YOU ALL A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR
THE DIRECTORS
A new ventilation system has been installed for the start of the Winter League Season to ensure player safety. Fresh air will now be constantly introduced into the playing area to the recommended EIBA standard.
This is major and necessary expenditure of the Club’s capital.

Financial Future
The Club is now in a ‘survival’ situation while the pandemic continues.
As a non-profit making Club, owned by the members, we rely on members’ subs and playing fees to pay overheads (staff, utilities, maintenance etc). Members are therefore encouraged to renew their membership for 2020 / 2021 even if not bowling in order to ensure our ongoing viability. We would not wish the Club to close, as others have and will.
