Scarborough Open Bowls Successes for Hornsea Players
Scarborough Bowls Centre traditionally runs its Bowls Festival in May with both Indoor and Crown Green tournaments taking place. This year the club ran an Autumn Tournament in addition to the May Bowls Festival and both events saw success for Hornsea players.

May Festival
The May festival attracted players from afar afield as Germany this year, with many players making a week of it staying locally in B&B’s and caravan sites. Four Hornsea players entered with the triples team of Simon Wright plus Lis & Mike Watson, just missing out of a place in the semi’s. Simon and Mike teamed up for the open pairs and were semi-finalists, however the partnership of Lis Watson and Sylvia Dunn went a step further and were delighted to get runners up prize.
Lis and Simon also played in the singles with Simon storming through the heats and playing a strong game on Finals Day to win the Open Singles competition.

Autumn Bowls Tournament
The Autumn tournament only had pairs and triples competitions however Hornsea fielded two teams in the pairs and one in the triples.
In the pairs Ron Bulless and Steve Haslam progressed to finals day whilst Lis and Mike Watson narrowly missed out on shot difference by a single shot with two wins and a loss (to eventual runners up Joseph Mann & Jack Bird).
In the triples, the team of Ron Bulless, Sylvia Dunn and Steve Haslam qualified for finals day with two wins and a draw.
On the finals day Ron & Steve went out in a close match in the semi – final having been level with two ends to go.
Better news in the triples with Ron, Sylvia & Steve winning their semi-final 20-2. In the final it could not have gotten off to a worst start dropping a 5 on the first end but they battled back to be level with one end to play and one shot down with skips to play – Steve Haslam let go with the Sheffield Shuffler and took the jack into the ditch but his wood was 8 feet away – so he bowled a hanger 1 inch off the ditch to seal the victory.
With the majority of the bowlers playing on their home green this was a very good reflection on our Club. Well done to all that took part!
